There are three inviolable rules in life, and understanding any one of them will benefit you for a lifetime. First, your temper should not exceed your abilities. When children throw tantrums, it's cute; but when adults get angry over minor issues, it only makes them look foolish. All human suffering is essentially an anger towards one’s own ineptitude. In life, those who are the most inept often become slaves to their tempers. Those with deeper insights and greater abilities remain calm and composed, handling heavy matters lightly and effortlessly. Always remember, if you do not have the ability to clean up the mess, do not let your volatile emotions run wild. Second, wealth should not exceed virtue. When virtue exceeds gain, there will surely be rewards; when gain exceeds virtue, there will be losses. You must understand that every penny you earn is always balanced by your virtue, effort, and sweat. When your wealth and status surpass your moral character and abilities, you will find yourself in a state of anxiety over gain and loss. It is like a bowl: if your bowl is too shallow, it cannot hold the influx of wealth and cannot accommodate blessings, and you will be retaliated against by money. Because the way of heaven is to reduce excess and replenish deficiency, but the way of man does not work that way; it reduces the deficient to serve the excessive. Third, desires should not exceed abilities. A so-called glorious life is merely a prisoner of desire. When what you pursue outpaces you, these things will eventually drift away in another way. What one can ultimately possess is always matched to one’s abilities or virtues. Many people feel unfortunate often because their desires overshadow their abilities. Take what you should take, let go of what you should let go, want what you should want, and release what you should release. Instead of envying others' lavish feasts, it’s better to cherish your own simple meals. Finally, I hope everyone remembers that cultivating today does not ask about the road, and tomorrow's harvest will come in its own time.
